Transitions Bilingual Mental Health Services
M.Cristina Isaza-Chapman M.A. MFT., LPC
Life transitions often come accompanied by fears
and challenges, along with alternatives and new opportunities for growth. As an experienced bilingual/bi-cultural therapist with eighteen years
in practice, I will guide you to sort out these
challenges in order to improve your quality of life
and to make this transition less painful for you
and for your loved ones.
Within a safe and warm environment, and based
on your needs and goals, we may explore practical
and brief solutions to specific problems that may
arise when encountering phases such as
adolescence, middle life, marriage, parenting, immigration and acculturation processes, job stress, grief and unresolved family issues that arise when taking care of an elderly family member.
You will also have the opportunity to learn and develop new tools in order to change and break unwanted relational cycles that may negatively impact your day to
day life. I will employ many theoretical approaches, and I will tailor the best treatment plan that fits your needs, taking into an account your cultural background.
I have extensive training and experience in the treatment delivery of structural and strategic family therapy, brief and focus oriented therapy, MST model training ( multi-systemic therapy) all of which are research based evidence. Other areas of expertise are focused on cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and psycho dynamic approaches. With humanistic and mindful awareness, I will support your growth and inner healing at the cognitive, emotional, physical and spiritual levels.
Based on the above training experience, I could offer you the following services:
My treatment philosophy is based on the view that, when possible, family involvement in treatment is the most effective way to help youth, adults and the elders with their problems. I see family members as full collaborators in the treatment planning and delivery process. In my treatment approach, I encourage not only the behavioral change, but also the personal and emotional enrichment and spiritual healing.
I provide individual counseling for anxiety, trauma, depression, stress, and relationship difficulties.
My approach as a trained couples therapist is to help couples move from being adversaries and/or strangers to collaborators and confidantes. As a trained couples therapist, I will help you and your partner identify the differences and conflicts that exist in your relationship. I will guide you in assessing which changes are needed in the behavior of each partner, so that both individual's emotional needs are met. Couples therapy will involve learning how to communicate more effectively, and how to listen more closely. Couples must learn to avoid competing with each other, to identify common life goals and to share fairly the responsibilities within the relationship. Sometimes this process is very similar to individual psychotherapy, sometimes it is more like mediation, and often times it is educational in approach. Ideally the combination of the these three components is what makes couples counseling more effective.
I can help you resolve anger that is creating trouble in your relationship. I will help you use a combination of self-observation and skill building to create new ways to respond to stress and provocation, utilizing principles of mindfulness, meditation, and cognitive behavioral therapy.
In the same way that adolescence is conceptualized as journey from childhood to adulthood, parenting adolescents can also be thought of as a journey. To help teenagers grow into healthy adults, parents need to teach them how to take responsibility for their behavior, their values, and their choices.
Using straightforward and practical methods, I will show parents how to bring control to an out-of-control family life, how to set limits and still be loving parents, how to define legitimate boundaries for the family, and how to instill in teens a godly character.
I offer all of the above services in both English and in Spanish.
I invite you to contact me so we can talk about your situation. If I am not the individual that best fits your needs, I will make sure to refer you to another professional that can best help you. The first 30 minute phone consultation is free of charge. Consult with your therapist about insurance options/and fees.
